One of the oldest gerontology societies in the world, the IGS has been in existence since 1951 and seeks to develop expertise in the science of ageing.

The Society aims to develop a broad portfolio of ageing research in Ireland, and the Executive Committee membership includes representatives of social, psychological and healthcare aspects of ageing.

The Irish Gerontological Society is a multidisciplinary society, made up of physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and associated paramedical members.

The Society organises an annual scientific meeting, which serves as a forum for presentation of research and education.

It has close links with the Irish Society for Physicians in Geriatric Medicine and other similar international societies.
